Gutter Maintenance Tips for Winter

Advantage Seamless Gutters shares some things you can do to maintain efficient gutters at home.

Clear Debris

Leaves, twigs and other debris can clog your gutters and downspouts, preventing them from properly draining snow and ice melt. This can cause structural damage if left unattended. Remove all debris using a sturdy ladder, some gloves and a gutter scoop or garden trowel. In winter, this is best done after a thaw.

Test Downspouts

Once you’re done removing the debris, test your downspouts for clogging. Use a hosepipe and pour water on your gutter or downspout. If the water doesn’t go down, your downspouts might be clogged. Ask your local gutter company for help de-clogging your downspouts.

Use Heat Tape

Ice blockages can form on your gutters when the temperature goes well below freezing point. Install heat tape on your gutters to help prevent ice from forming your gutters, or to remove them when they’re already there. This will help water to flow freely into your downspout and away from your home.

Check for Damage

Aside from doing the above, you should also inspect your gutter system and check for damages. See if there are any leaks or if they are securely attached to the house. Also, inspect your home’s fascia, siding and foundation for any signs of water-related damage such as rotting or staining. If damage is evident, your gutter might be leaking somewhere. Is your gutter in need of repair or replacement?
